Brooch: Harrison Jim Navajo Inlay
Brooch: Harrison Jim Navajo Inlay
Harrison Jim Senior, sometimes referred to as Jim Harrison or Jimmie Harrison, is a Diné (Navajo) silversmith from Gallup, NM who began working with metals as a buffer right after high school. He met and began buffing for Tommy Jackson, which after two years led Harrison Jim down the path of starting his own studio. Naturally, he began with a similar style as Jackson, mostly creating overlay jewelry in the 1980’s and early 90s, but his passion was for the “old style”—the heavy, cast, Ingot style. All handmade, diligent, slow process pieces. Nothing machine made.
His grandfather was a silversmith by trade and he had some aunts who he recalls making bracelets in the 1970’s. He is well known in the silversmithing community and was personally inspired by McKee Platero who also crafts in the “old style”. He was and continues to influence the approach to Navajo jewelry making and, honestly, is not only the type of artist that you are honored to have work from, but simply seems like one of the coolest guys around. I love his inlay work, especially this piece, but I hope to come across one of his true passion pieces in the “old style”.
